LA JUIVE
Grand Théâtre de Genève
LA JUIVE
de Fromental Halévy
Performance of your choice
Grand Théâtre de Genève
Here is another monument to the fascinating and questionable genre of French grand opera: Fromental Halévy's La Juive (1835). La Juive was Halévy's first great success, with its colossal spectacle and final execution scene, the stuff of operatic legend. Beneath its sumptuous stage finery, La Juive speaks of religious intolerance, imperialism and the tragedy of medieval Jewish life in Europe threatened by Catholic fanaticism and forced to migrate constantly. The goldsmith Éléazar and his daughter, the beautiful Rachel, take in a young man who introduces himself as Samuel, but the truth and the price of love will only too soon become clear to the protagonists. American director David Alden will treat the harsh and disturbing plot of La Juive with his trademark sense of irony and black comedy. At his side to rekindle this complicated, exciting and dangerous operatic artefact, Marc Minkowski reigns as the undisputed maestro of French grand opera.

de Gaetano Donizetti

Grand Théâtre de Genève
In the second part of our Donizetti trilogy about the Tudors, Elizabeth of England returns alongside her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. She who was once also Queen of France is an expert at imposing her whims and wills, juggling lovers, partisans and rebellions. Channeling her father Henry VIII, Elizabeth dispatches her rival to the scaffold, where Mary does not lose the opportunity to stage her own death...
Mariame Clément and Julia Hansen take us back to the phantasmagorical universe they initiated last season with characters who, in the style of Henry James, seem to visit each other from one opera to the next, weaving history, its hidden reasons and our gaze with an invisible thread. Stéphanie d'Oustrac sings the title role and Elsa Dreisig, the Virgin Queen. The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande follows the lead of Maestro Stefano Montanari who, from behind his fortepiano, rebuilds the musical bridges between Donizetti’s predecessors and successors.

PARSIFAL
de Richard Wagner

Grand Théâtre de Genève
Something is rotten in the state of the Grail knights. Their king Amfortas has lost the Holy Spear to the fiend Klingsor. Amfortas is crushed with shame and his wound festers horribly without killing him. In the midst of this ailing world, young Parsifal appears and the Grail knights make him their champion. Trials and temptations ensue for the pure-hearted Parsifal who finally retrieves the Holy Spear, the cause and the cure of Amfortas’ wound. Amfortas may now die and Parsifal take his place as king. German director Michael Thalheimer sees Parsifal as the “wound” of bidding farewell to the world. The world must bid farewell to the Grail knighthood and the knights to their past and their worldly works. Jonathan Nott already has a legendary performance of Wagner’s Ring cycle at the Lucerne Festival under his belt. With the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and some of the best Wagner singers of the day, they embark on the great spiritual journey that is Parsifal.

NABUCCO
Grand Théâtre de Genève
NABUCCO
de Giuseppe Verdi
Performance of your choice
Grand Théâtre de Genève
Giuseppe Verdi’s early work Nabucco has often been interpreted as an epic call (“Va pensiero”) to the national liberation struggle that would eventually lead to Italian unity. However, the opera emphasises, perhaps unwittingly, a particularity of rabbinic thought, the idea of the "withdrawal" of the divine as a presence of absence. Brazilian director, filmmaker and author Christiane Jatahy, who was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2022, will organise the Jewish people’s resistance in Babylon by speaking, as she is wont to do in her readings of the classics, the words of those who are still resisting today at the four corners of the world, from the Middle East to the Amazon. Maestro Antonino Fogliani will lead the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, through the piece’s differences and concordances, along with a cast of extraordinary bel canto singers, including Riccardo Zanellato, Nicola Alaimo and Saioa Hernandez.
