Is opera elitist and inaccessible? Not at all: today, it can be a vibrant field of creativity. Bold staging, new technologies, and contributions from artists working in other art forms: opera as a laboratory of modernity. Under the direction of Aviel Cahn, from 2019 to 2026, the Grand Théâtre de Genève has presented an energetic program open to all disciplines. It has invited directors with a keen critical eye; leading figures in the visual arts have designed sets, and choreographers have taken on masterpieces from the Baroque repertoire. And it did not overlook the expectations of music lovers, inviting top-tier conductors and casts. The institution was awarded the prestigious title of “Opera of the Year” in 2020; in 2022, Belgian choreographer, director, and dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui took the helm of the Grand Théâtre’s ballet company. And then there was *La Plage du Grand Théâtre*.
It is the behind-the-scenes story of this adventure that is revealed here, in superbly illustrated pages. The book explores the Grand Théâtre de Genève’s ambitious vision for opera: one that is connected to the realities of the contemporary world and open to city life. At its heart lies this question: how do we experience opera today?
